We want to give your quilt the best outcome during the longarm quilting process. Here are some steps to take which will help make this happen.
Preparation Tips
1. Seam your backing together and trim the selvage from the center seam. Leaving the selvage as part of the center seam causes the backing to pucker. Some quilters love using 108 wide backs, solely because they do not have to seam their backing. I will seam the backing for an extra fee.
2. The backing fabric and batting must be at least 4 inches larger on all four sides than the quilt top. We use clamps on the sides and roller bars to attach all four sides to our quilt frame, which requires extra fabric. This means your quilt top needs to be 8 inches longer and wider.
3. Press and clip loose threads, especially on the back, and iron your backing seams flat. Closed, flat seams make happy quilts. Sometimes loose threads show through on the quilted surface (especially white background areas), snipped threads help minimize this.
4. Mark directional quilt tops and directional backings. If your quilt top and/or backing is directional, please note it on the Quilting Order Form and then mark each top side with a safety pin and paper bag.
